This book is a reasonable look at the history of railways on the island of Ireland. The preface sets out the political and economic reality of Ireland in the 19th Century,
which was not conducive to railway development, especially given the laissez faire attitude of the Government. The map accompanying this chapter is probably the
most accurate map of the railways of Ireland that I have seen in any publication, showing most lines that ever existed. The small number of omissions, such as the
Birr to Portumna Bridge and Magilligan to Magilligan Point line can be excused due to the lack of longevity of these. Short sections abandoned upon extenstion of a
line are also not shown.
The book is laid out by company and chapters are devoted to:
* Dublin & South Eastern Railway
* Great Southern & Western Railway
* Midland Great Western Railway
* Waterford & Tramore Railway
* Cork Bandon & South Coast Railway
* Cork & Macroom Railway
* Timoleague and Courtmacsherry Extension Light Railway
* Cork City Railway
* Great Southern Railway(s)
* Coras Iompair Eireann
* Great Northern Railway (Ireland)
* Dundalk Newry & Greenore Railway
* Sligo Leitrim and Northern Counties Railway
* Belfast & County Down Railway
* Northern Counties Committee
* Ulster Transport Authority and Northern Ireland Railways
The format of each chapter gives a history of each company with illustrations, mainly of locomotives and rolling stock.
